The Union Bay Campground in Upper Michigan’s Porcupine Mountains State Park is a very popular campground that is located right on the shores of Lake Superior. This campground is located on the east side of the park and is the only modern campground in the park that has electric service and a modern restroom and shower building. The Park has one other drive-in campground, Presque Isle Campground, and many backpacking campsites.

The Union Bay Campground has 100 sites; all these sites have 30-amp electric hookups. Some of the electric power pedestals are shared between two site and are in less-than-optimal locations so it may be wise to bring an extension power cord.

Most of the campsites are partially shaded, but are close together. The campsite sizes vary a lot with some being good for tents and small campers, while others can handle large RVs. There are over a dozen sites that are located right on the rocky shores of Lake Superior. The campground has a playground. Near the entrance to the campground there is a dump station with fresh drinking water available to fill RVs. There is also a boat launch near the campground entrance.

As of 2021, the cost of a night’s stay was $28. Additionally, a Michigan Recreation Passport is required. All the campsites can be reserved.

If you require a modern campground, this campground makes a great basecamp for exploring the Porcupine Mountains. It is a short drive from the campground to the overlook of the famous Lake of the Clouds.
