The hike to the Arcola High Bridge is a 1.7 mile out and back trek that takes you to the banks of the Saint Croix River for a view of the historic steel arch bridge. This impressive bridge has five steel arches and was built in 1910 and 1911. This railroad bridge is still in use today and towers 185 feet above the Saint Croix River. The hike is located within the Arcola Bluffs Day Use Area which is part of the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway.

The trailhead for this hike is located about three and a half miles north of Stillwater on Arcola Trail. Free parking is located along the side of the road; there is enough space to accommodate about seven or eight vehicles. There is a trail map at the trailhead. The trail to view the Arcola High Bridge is not marked but is easy to follow.  Dogs are allowed on this trail if they are on a leash.

The hike begins in a hardwood forest and is pretty level; you will encounter a T-intersection about a quarter of a mile into the hike. Take a left at this intersection onto a wide trail to begin a smooth but steady decline down to the river. You will pass a grove of cedar trees and a cross a small stream along the way. There are other trails that meet the trail down to the river, but it is pretty easy to determine which trail takes you to the river. Once you reach to riverside, take in the view of this remarkable bridge. There are side trails that take one to bridge level; do not go on the railroad tracks or bridge as it is still in use today. After enjoying the views return to the trailhead or explore one of the other trails at the Arcola Bluffs Day Use Area.
