Judge CR Magney State Park is located between Grand Marais and Grand Portage off of Highway 61 along Minnesota’s North Shore. The park is most popular for the famous Devil’s Kettle waterfall. Half of the Brule River drops 50 feet into a pool, and the rest pours into a huge pothole. For years it was a mystery where the water ended up after entering the pothole. Hydrologists now think the water entering the kettle is coming up just downstream of the falls.
There are 9 miles of hiking in the park, and the most popular hike takes visitors along the Brule River to Devil’s Kettle. Other trails traverse more forested areas, including a 1-mile self-guided nature trail. The Superior Hiking Trail passes through the park as well. Trails are not groomed in the winter, but cross-country skiers are welcome on the Timberdoodle and Gauthier Creek Trails. Snowshoeing is welcome both on and off trails within Judge C.R. Magney State Park.
The park is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The park offers 27 drive-in sites that are heavily wooded and well-spaced. The RV length limit is 45 feet. Winter camping is not available at this park, and flush toilets and showers are available from mid-May through the beginning of October. Vault toilets are also located throughout the campground and in day-use areas. At the park office visitors can get information, check to see if any naturalist programs are scheduled, and purchase firewood.
