Chewalla Lake Recreation Area’s name is from the Choctaw word “Chiho-la,” meaning supreme being. This area was significant to the Choctaw Indians. They once built a ceremonial mound where the lake now stands. A small mound commemorating the site was reconstructed near an overlook to the lake.

The Holly Springs National Forest and surrounding areas offer few places to cool off during the hot and humid summers. Chewalla is the perfect place to relax and take a dip in the cool water. Surrounded by beautiful trees and the scent of pine, you can find a piece of serenity here. During the spring, summer and early fall, swimming teams from around the area meet here for trials and other events.

This lake is open to many other types of water activities such as boating, kayaking and fishing. If you decide to go fishing in the lake and you forget to buy your license, you can purchase one from your smart phone here. There is also a $5 good faith park fee at the entrance to the park. National park passes are also accepted in place of the fee.
