The Barry’s Island Trail is an easy hike along the Bighorn Canyon rim with impressive views of the canyon and the Bighorn Mountains. The trail cuts through an open landscape of juniper and sagebrush, vegetative species characteristic of the Great Basin plant group.

The trail begins from the Barry’s Landing parking lot and follows a red dirt track along Chain Canyon to Barry’s Island. The trail provides hike-in access to one of the Canyon’s few campgrounds not already accessible by road. The Medicine Creek Campground has six sites, all of which are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

When the lake elevation is high, cliff jumpers can be seen from the Barry’s Landing Trail. High water may also cause some parts of the trail to be covered. For hikers, a higher alternate trail is evident above the main trail. When the lake is low, see just how high it normally is by finding the clear waterline on the canyon walls.
