There are a plethora of recreational options in Glacier National park, with several amazing trails departing from almost every trailhead. A great day trip for a family, someone afraid of heights, or maybe just a recovery day, is definitely to be found at Bullhead Lake. This hike begins from the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn in the Many Glacier area, right next to the Iceberg Lake Trail, and it follows the Swiftcurrent Valley to the base of Swiftcurrent Pass. For those who want an extra challenge and more dramatic views, Swiftcurrent Pass makes a great extension for this hike.

A lot of hikers starting this trail may miss the first view of the day, a short side trip to Fishercap Lake. It’s only a couple hundred feet from the trail, but Fishercap’s backdrop of mountains is certainly stunning. This lake is also a great place to try and spot moose early in the morning or early evening.

The trail will meander along Swiftcurrent Creek, gaining a modest 1,300 feet on the way to Bullhead Lake. On the way you will pass Redrock Falls, which is fed by Redrock Lake just beyond. Eventually you will reach Bullhead Lake, aptly named as the valley is a great place to spot moose due to the array of lakes and vegetation. Beyond Bullhead Lake, the imposing Swiftcurrent Pass looms above, if you have the time and the legs it makes a wonderful extension; just don’t forget that you have to come back the way you came.
