Tucked into a fold of the Swan Range just west of the Bob Marshall Wilderness of Montana is Holland Lake and the recreation area encompassing it. One of the most popular hikes of the many that originate near the lake is the dead-end trail up to Holland Falls.

The trail starts at the trailhead parking just east of the Bay Loop of the campground. The Holland Falls route branches off not far from the trailhead and heads toward the lake. There is an immediate fork in the trail; the correct one leads left and is labeled simply “dead end trail." Most of the route follows the north shore of the lake with views between the trees of the surrounding mountains. At the east end of the lake, the trail becomes more exposed and climbs above the shore, eventually turning into the creek drainage. The falls are just ahead.

The 50-foot falls are impressive and fun to explore with a lot of spray that feels good after a hot hike. Be sure to check out Holland Lake Campground if you plan to stay in the area.
