This 3 mile hike combines the “3 Mile Smile” and “Badger Pass” trails to make an enjoyable and fairly easy loop hike. In addition to hiking, this area is extremely popular with mountain bikers so be sure to keep an eye out for them. The only caveat is accessing the trail. A rough road is in store for those driving to the 3 Mile Smile Trailhead. While it is possible in a low clearance vehicle such as a sedan, a better option may be parking at the Cottonwood/Dead Horse Trailhead and walking the road in. Doing so would add 1.2 miles to the hike (.6 mile road walk each way).
Once on trail enjoy the well travelled tread and easy hiking that this loop offers. If hiking counter-clockwise the trail gradually gains elevation as it meanders through desert vegetation and juniper trees. You’ll pass an interesting small canyon of black rock, and eventually come to a junction where you’ll take a left.
This is the only “hard” section of trail, but even so it is not difficult. You’ll ascend a series of switchbacks until topping out on a ridge. Enjoy the views and continue down on what is the Badger Pass Trail.
The next stretch is very enjoyable as it winds between beautiful desert hills before opening up and offering stunning views toward the towering walls of the nearby Red Rock Canyon area.
Continue along and take the next junction to the left that will lead back to the trailhead.
