Lamoille Lake is a scenic glacier-carved lake lying at the base of a stone mountain, and at 1.6 miles, it is the nearest lake to the Lamoille Canyon Trailhead parking area along the Ruby Crest Trail.

Taking on just under 800 feet of elevation gain in just over 1.5 miles, the trail quickly climbs out of the parking area and skirts a creek before beginning a series of switchbacks up along the shady mountain wall. The trail is very scenic and at times turns to views of the bowl at the southern edge of Lamoille Canyon and the lower mountain ridges of the northern extreme.

While the distance is not demanding, the elevation gain combined with the 9000-foot trailhead elevation makes this trail better for those of moderate to advanced ability or those prepared to take their time.

At the top is Lamoille Lake, a small lake flanked by trees on either side, and some brush along the stone basin on its path cascading into the bowl below.

From the cold lake, it is possible to continue further up the right side of the lake toward Liberty Lake or to turn around and return back down the trail.

Because this area is on the north side of the Ruby Mountains, Lamoille Canyon, and this trail in particular, will hold snow later in the season and get snow earlier than most other portions of the Rubies. Be prepared for snow on the higher portions of this trail.

A vault toilet is available at the trailhead.
