Ice skating in Northern Nevada is a special treat, and Little Washoe Lake is an ideal spot when the conditions cooperate. Though the lake does fish well in the summer and becomes quite deep in wet seasons, winter brings a decline in volume that keeps Little Washoe both small and shallow for a lake. The lake's winter profile lends itself to easily accessible ice skating once winter has set in. Several groups use the open area, and the community works to put together an ice hockey rink on cold winter days.

The ice is not maintained, so bring a flat-edged snow shovel to create a smooth surface. Though cell phone reception is good and there are emergency services nearby, users should always exercise caution and remember there are no indicators regarding ice thickness.
