The Mustang Loop Trail is a popular trail with both hikers and mountain bikers alike. It begins at the Late Night Trailhead, along with a wide variety of other hiking/biking trails. You’ll probably notice the several informative plaques at the trailhead that describe the Old Spanish Trail. In the 1700s Spain began searching for a direct land route to link its New Mexico and California colonies. What would come to be known as the Old Spanish Trail ran through this area on its 1,200 mile stretch from Santa Fe to near Los Angeles.

The Mustang Loop is an easy hike and begins by passing through large sections of Joshua Tree Cacti. As you round about to the northwest you’ll be met by stunning view of the Red Rock Escarpment in the distance. Also, be sure to keep an eye open for wildlife as wild (feral) horses and burros roam the area. If you see any, please do not feed them.

The trail eventually loops back around and heads south. The last stretch parallels the highway and, while there is a glimpse of the distant downtown Las Vegas skyline, the noise and fumes from passing traffic make this stretch rather unenjoyable. Thankfully you’ll be back to the trailhead soon and ready to tackle the next trail!
