The River Mountain Trail (not to be confused with the River Mountains Loop Trail also in the area) is a hiking only trail that leads to the summit of Black Mountain Overlook and provides incredible views of the surrounding area including Boulder City, Lake Mead and even a distant Las Vegas.

The trail begins by passing beside an urban area with homes and follows a concrete waterway for a short distance. The River Mountain Trail was originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1935-1937. The trail has since been revived and today is a popular hike. Continuing onward the trail crosses several tracks and trails - all of which are part of nearby Bootleg Canyon’s impressive network of mountain biking trails. All of these junctions are obvious and many are signed.

The River Mountain Trail continues along without gaining a significant amount of elevation until it nears the base of the saddle between Red Mountain and Black Mountain. The trail then climbs to the top of the saddle utilizing some of the most well-graded and pleasant switchbacks I’ve ever hiked.

From the saddle the trail heads east where you’ll be able to see to the top of Black Mountain Overlook. In addition you’ll also begin to have fantastic views both down to Boulder City and to distant downtown Las Vegas. After a final set of switchbacks you will arrive at the summit. While this isn’t the true summit of Black Mountain the views are still downright amazing.

In addition to the stellar views, there is also a bench and an informative plaque at the overlook summit area. This is an out-and-back trail, so return the way you came back to the trailhead when you are finished at the summit.
