Sand Harbor has some of the oldest history in all of Lake Tahoe. Originally inhabited by the Washoe Native American Tribe, the Sand Harbor area was later home to the Sierra Wood and Lumber Company in the 1880s. The land then became a luxurious summer resort for well-off guests. The State of Nevada finally bought the land, and Sand Harbor became the centerpiece for the Lake Tahoe State Park.

Sand Harbor State park has a multitude of activities along its shores, including scuba diving, swimming, kayaking, boating, hiking and picnicking. A half-mile nature trail loop snakes through the rocks and around the back of the visitor center. You may also follow a half-mile trail along the shore to the nearby Memorial Point Overlook. Boat and kayak rentals are available, and the visitor center holds a small snack bar and grill. The yearly Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival takes place in the park with an incredible backdrop of the lake and surrounding peaks.

Although entry is a bit expensive at $12, the fee includes entrance to other parks in the area, including the beautiful Spooner Lake Park.
