The Sandstone Canyon Loop Trail is one of several trails inside Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. The loop heads south from the main area of the park, tracing the bottom of the mountains that lie to the west. Though it is a loop, there are two distinct portions along this trail that meet at the far end. From the trailhead, beginning in a clockwise direction will take hikers along a wide dirt path accessible to emergency and maintenance vehicles. Beginning in a counterclockwise direction will lead hikers on more rugged singletrack trail that feels like a much more authentic desert hiking trail. The two portions meet at the far end.

The only shade along the hike is a couple creek crossings, where the dry exposed desert trail dips into a lush creekside area with year-round water flow with a slight sulfurous odor to it. Be sure to listen closely for the sound of feral burros. Also, be aware that in addition to the trail's 1.6-mile length, accessing the trailhead from the Spring Mountain Ranch parking area requires an additional 0.3-mile hike each direction.

Spring Mountain Ranch State Park has a $10 day use fee. More information is available by visiting the park website or by calling 702.875.4141.
