El Morro Campground

El Morro National Monument is a fascinating site where visitors can explore the tracks of those who made history in the American southwest. The park makes a great short stop while traveling through, but the small campground nearby offers a chance to spend more time exploring the monument and generally enjoying the high desert location.

El Morro Campground consists of nine bare-bones sites spread out on a small loop a short drive from the monument headquarters and visitor center. There is a small campfire area and the most basic of amenities. Fresh water is available except in winter. Best of all, this campground is currently free, as is the monument itself. The campground would make a good base camp for exploring the nearby El Malpais National Monument, a much larger park with lava tubes and other geological wonders.
