The Sandia Mountains define the horizon above Albuquerque. East of the city, the desert slopes up to meet the cliffs and canyons of the range. That's where the roads end and the trails begin. One park with a particular bounty of trails is Elena Gallegos Open Space. Situated at about 6,500 feet in elevation, in pinyon-juniper savannah, the trails overlook the city as the Sandias rise overhead. Most of the hikes are casual strolls, but there's also the strenuous Pino Trail which climbs to the crest of the mountains.

Elena Gallegos Open Space is a community-focused recreation area that features local art, offers educational programs, and provides easy access to nature for city residents. A network of sandy trails meander through the park; a few trails are designated for hikers only, while most are shared with bikers and equestrians. There is even a wheelchair and stroller-friendly nature trail with a wetland and particularly good wildlife viewing opportunities. Families might enjoy a picnic at one of several stone shelters with grills, and larger group shelters are available by reservation. There is small admission fee: just $2 per car on the weekends and $1 on weekdays.
