Chaco Culture National Historical Park is a massive place, and a day trip is barely adequate to see its major sites much less explore some of the backcountry areas. Luckily, there is a good little campground at the park that offers the chance to spend more time exploring and experiencing sunrise and sunset without stressing about driving the dirt road out in the dark.

Most of Gallo Campground’s sites may be reserved, but some are first-come, first-served. This campground is pretty popular, so getting there early to find a site is essential if you don't have reservations. There is a section with walk-in tent sites, and all sites are open to tent campers. Some sites are suitable for RVs under 35 feet, but most are smaller. Amazingly, there is a small cliff dwelling ruin right at the campground and visible from many camp sites. There is also a trailhead for the hike to Wiiji, a small ruin and petroglyph site that is infrequently visited.

It is important to note that the route into Chaco includes 14 miles of gravel road, and 7 miles of it can be severely washboarded. Larger RVs should be prepared for a rough drive, and checking ahead to determine campsite availability is strongly advised.
