Buttermilk Falls is an approximately 30-foot sliding waterfall that plunges into a pleasant pool at the end. The falls become a powerful, thundering torrent in the spring and after heavy rains.

Just 200 yards from the road, the falls are also the perfect place to go for a swim or to bring a picnic. There are several picnic tables and rock outcroppings near the falls, and there are a handful of firepits that can be used as well.

The Northern Forest Canoe Trail passes through here, and additional swimming holes can be found by following the portage trail below the falls. The stretch of the Raquette River above Buttermilk Falls is popular with canoeists as a day or overnight trip. Additionally, it is common to find anglers fishing along the banks above and below the falls.
