Dunderberg Mountain is a popular day hike throughout the year and the parking can be very crowded on weekends. This loop is also very steep and rocky so sturdy hiking boots are a good idea.

Start from the parking area along Route 9W/202. The trailhead is down the road  and not directly at the parking pull off. The loop starts on the Timp-Torne trail (blue markers). After 0.25 miles the trail begins to climb. A little over one mile from the trailhead is the tunnel for the Dunderberg Spiral Railway. This was Railway was started in 1890 but ended within a year. This trail follows much of the grading that took place in 1890. After 1.5 miles from the tunnel, the Timp-Torne trail intersects with the 1777 Trail. Continue straight and the Timp-Torne Trail will meet up with the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail (red dot on white marker).

Soon after the trails meet they reach the rock formation called The Timp. The location offers great views of West Mountain and the West Mountain shelter. To complete the loop, turn back to where the two trail converged. Turn left onto the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail. After about 1 mile you begin the ridge hike up Bald Mountain with great views of the Bear Mountain tower. From the top of Bald Mountain its 3 miles back to the trailhead. Along the way are great views of the Bear Mountain Bridge and the Hudson River.
