You are here
This loop hike encompasses the Hogencamp Mines and traverses over the top of Hogencamp Mountain. The parking area is at the northeast side of Lake Shannatati. If going on the weekend, make sure to arrive early as the parking lot can fill up quickly. However, parking on the road is permitted when the lot is full. Start at the Long Path trailhead (turquois markers), and follow it along Lake Shannatati and into the forest for 1.3 miles. The Long Path will then meet with the Dunning Trail (Yellow markers). Turn left and follow the Dunning Trail along a forest road. After about 300 yards, notice the Hogencamp mines scattered in the forest on the right. You may have to look closely as they are not well defined and not very big.
After 1.25 miles on the Dunning Trail, the route appears to continue straight on a wide steep path. Stay on the Dunning Trail which leads to Bald Rock Shelter after a very short distance. This is a great campsite area. The Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail (red markers) passes along the shelter. To continue the loop, turn right onto the Ramapo-Dunderberg trail and follow along the ridge for .75 miles.
The trail drops down to meet the Lichen Trail (blue markers) and a great view point. Continue straight on the Ramapo-Dunderberg trail as it ascends Hogencamp Mountain. After .75 miles from the Lichen Trail, you reach Times Square section and the intersection with the Long Path. Make a sharp right onto the Long Path and follow for 2.1 miles back to the trailhead.
