Among all the high peaks in the Adirondacks are some that are not so high yet still offer great views with very little effort to reach. Owl’s Head is one of those summits: short way to top, minimal elevation gain, and several ledges and cliffs from which to soak in the views. The mountain is located minutes from the village of Keene. It seems to be a popular spot for locals looking to get their daily exercise. The trail is likely to be well-trodden.

This small peak is perfect to introduce children to snowshoeing or hiking. It’s just over a half-mile up, the grade is very gentle, and the elevation gain clocks in at 482 feet. There are even rocky areas on the trails that kids will enjoy. The views of neighboring peaks could even inspire future outings. Hurricane Mountain and its fire tower are prominent and might attract interest.

Adults can also enjoy this summit. It’s perfect for an early morning sunrise without needing to get an alpine start or for a late afternoon sunset without having to don the headlamp for several hours.

Note that Owl’s Head is located on a private property, but the trail and mountain are public domain. The parking area is along a private road. Please be respectful of the neighbors and their properties.
