Sackets Harbor Battlefield

The Sackets Harbor Battlefield is a New York State Historic site, portions of which have been recognized since 1866. Despite it's name, the battlefield played a limited role in the war of 1812, but it remains a great resource to enjoy views of Lake Ontario and learn about the history of the War of 1812.

With a crushed stone walkway, several cannons, and a restored 1850s Naval Yard and Comandant's House, the battlefield is an excellent place to stretch the legs. There is also a large barn with rotating historical displays. In the summer months, costumed guides provide tours and re-enactments of life during the 1800s.

The namesake battle occurred on May 29, 1813. British-Canadian forces attacked the American shipyard while the majority of American forces were on an offensive campaign to the north. The attack was largely unsuccessful, although a fire caused significant damage to the base. Later in the war, naval boats were built in Sackets Harbor to support the war efforts. No further attacks were made. 

After the war, the U.S. Navy maintained control of the area until 1955, during which period much of the battlefield was converted back into farmland. A small portion was designated as Centennial Park in 1913 to recognize all who died in the War of 1812, but the area had been held for this reason since 1866.
