The campground in Carolina Beach State Park makes a good base camp for exploring the Cape Fear Area. This campground is tucked into the forest just west of the town of Carolina Beach, so you will have to drive or bike to reach the ocean beach. The small, quiet beaches of the state park on the Cape Fear River make a low-key alternative, though. Hiking, fishing, paddling, and boating are other activities available right around camp.

There are plenty of shady flat spots spread out in the forest here. The majority are tent and vehicle sites with no hookups, but nine full-hookup RV sites are available. Reservations are always recommended. Use caution when pulling into the sites because the perimeters of most sites are forested and you may find a tree in an inconvenient spot. You can request to change to another available site if necessary.

Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with cooking grate. Dispersed throughout the campground are water spigots and bathhouses with showers. Other amenities available include coin-op laundry, a dump station, vending machines, and a picnic area. The nearby marina has public boat ramps, kayak and paddleboard rentals, a general store, and a boater's lounge with concessions and Wi-Fi. Trails that leave from the campground including a kid's TRACK nature trail and the Campground Trail, which connects with the rest of the park's trails. An ADA-accessible Fitness Trail with outdoor exercise equipment is a short trip away on 7th Street.
