Ocracoke is easily one of the best places to visit in North Carolina. It's more difficult to get to than other areas of the Outer Banks, which means there are fewer people and more untouched stretches of seashore. Ocracoke Campground is located within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and it is the closest you can get to camping right on the beach. The campsites are quite spread out along the beachfront. There are sandy trails leading to the beach from each of these sites!
The campground has three free restroom and shower facilities located near a beach access ramp for off-road vehicles. You are welcome to drive on Ocracoke or Cape Hatteras National Seashore beaches with a permit, but you cannot camp on the beach or drive in the area directly in front of the Ocracoke Campground.
Reservations can be made for this campground, but they are usually only necessary for holiday weekends. If you don't mind the long drive and ferry trip, Ocracoke has arguably the best camping on the Outer Banks.
