The Wichita Mountains and their namesake refuge are located just outside of Lawton, Oklahoma. They are imposing and rise above the surrounding plains. The wildlife refuge protects hundreds of plant species, bird species, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. It is also home to free-range Texas longhorn and bison. Visitors can also expect to see prairie dogs, elk, and deer.

The Forty-Foot Hole is accessible by the Narrows Trail, which runs parallel to Cache Creek in the refuge. It is accessible by an approximately 0.75-mile, out-and-back trail and takes hikers past prime rock climbing areas to a creek that cascades over red rocks in a narrow canyon, similar to something you might expect in a desert landscape. It truly is a special place.

Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service, there are also 13 small lakes within the reserve and ample opportunities to to fish. Visitors to the refuge may also hike and rock climb. It is home to some of Oklahoma's tallest "peaks," Mount Scott (accessible by road, depending on conditions, visitors may otherwise walk up the road) and Mount Pinchot. If you are looking for a landscape that feels both out of place and beautiful, this is your spot. Overnight camping sites, both tent and RV, are available. Backcountry camping is also permitted in certain areas.
