Like Clear Lake and Fall Creek, Alpine Trail is a moniker that has been a favorite of literal minded explorers across the United States. This Alpine Trail stands out as some of the best mountain biking anywhere. While the section extending northeast from Elk Camp Shelter is generally considered too steep and rugged for good riding, the southern and most popular section is normally run as a shuttled ride and includes more than 5,000 feet of spectacular descent.

The trail follows a high ridge in the western foothills of the Cascades before it drops precipitously down to the hamlet of Westfir, which is situated at the confluence of the North Fork of the Middle Fork of the Willamette River and the Middle Fork of the Willamette River. The trail is accessible at a number of points, offering opportunities for those who wish to climb a portion of the trail but who don't want to attempt the entire 30-mile loop that would entail 5,000 feet of climbing. Watch for hikers and other riders, as this is a popular destination. Special thanks to Disciples of Dirt, Greater Oakridge Area Trail Stewards, and all the other volunteers who worked so hard to rehabilitate sections of Alpine Trail that were burned by the Buckhead fire in 2012.
