With 60 sites total, Cove Creek Campground is Detroit Lake's distant second largest campground, surpassed by Detroit Lake State Park Campground, which boasts a staggering 274 campsites on the far busier northern shore. Not only is the pace less hectic than the alternatives located directly off of Highway 22, Cove Creek also hosts an impressive Group Camp with its own picnic shelters and restroom facilities that can easily accommodate up to 12 vehicles and 70 people.

Sent in groves of second- and third-growth Douglas fir and the occasional western redcedar, the campsites are spacious and relatively private. Restroom facilities are very well maintained, but be sure to bring quarters as there's a steep charge for staying clean. Showers are coin operated, run $1.75, and last 3 to 5 minutes.

From Cove Creek Campground you can easily escape the hustle and bustle of Detroit Lake and head out on a great adventure by hiking to the top of nearby 3,058-foot Stahlman Point. Access this great hike by heading a few hundred yards west of the campground entrance on Blowout Road to a trailhead on the south side of the road just before Sauers Creek. The trail climbs 1,340 feet in 2.1 miles and passes a stand of old-growth forest and a sheer cliff before reaching a former lookout tower site with impressive views of 10,495-foot Mount Jefferson and the surrounding landscape.

Note: The campground is open early May through end of September. Call Recreation.gov at 877-444-6777 for specific dates. Entry gate is closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
