It's impossible to drive through Ecola State Park and not be in awe. The road toward Ecola Point is shielded in bright, mossy branches and winds through dense forest.

At Ecola Point, hikers are hit with vast views of the Pacific Ocean — and the occasional elk. The family-friendly hike to Indian Beach begins on the right side of the parking lot. The beginning of the path is paved and crosses a creek over a wooden footbridge. The coastal trail then winds at a slight incline along the beach's edge. The first view of rocky points and sand is almost immediate and foreshadows what's yet to come. The trail meanders through a thick old-growth setting and is fairly straightforward. If hikers plan to set out in winter or spring just after rainfall, be prepared to get muddy. Really muddy.

Most of the way to Indian Beach is coated in thick mud so the trail is best traveled in summer. The trail descends and pops hikers out in a cove that gives way to Indian Beach and views of an old decommissioned lighthouse. Hikers can stroll along the beach, which is less crowded than it's neighbor, Cannon Beach.

For a less muddy, but slightly more dangerous route back, consider making the trail a loop and walking back on the side of the road. The mossy old growth will not disappoint; just watch for cars.
