The Goodman Creek trail's old-growth beauty, great singletrack, and proximity to Eugene make it a classic ride. You may see local racers and other masochist types riding this as an out-and-back from the lower trailhead, but for the rest of us the preferred route is to make the gradual climb 4 miles up Goodman Creek Road to the upper trailhead before cruising back down. Watch out for vehicles on this popular gravel road.

Once you drop into the magical Goodman Creek canyon, the surrounding world of roads, cars, clear cuts recedes as your attention focuses on the narrow ribbon of trail winding sinuously through endless sorrel patches and past dense stands of vine maples, all under a canopy of massive ancient trees. There are a couple of short technical climbs that only the strongest and most talented riders will be able to 'clean.'  Near the bottom there is a good view of the creek's outlet into Lookout Point Reservoir. Watch out for other users near the bottom as this trail is also popular with hikers and horse riders, and please consider riding elsewhere when the trail is wet, as it is susceptible to damage. The Eugene area mountain biking group Disciples of Dirt has been instrumental in maintaining and repairing this trail, along with many others in the area, and they often organize rides here in the summer.

Comments

Watch out for poison oak, and this trail does get pretty slippery when it rains. But other than that it's very pretty!
