Government Cove is nicely sheltered by two surrounding peninsulas and provides the opportunity for calm paddling on the Columbia River. There is ample shoreline to explore, which also provides for a good fishing location. You can easily paddle in and out of the cove to explore the surrounding peninsulas, or you can venture out into the stronger current and rougher waters of the Columbia. If you just want to relax, you can float up next to the marshy peninsula on the east side of the cove and watch all the birds flying and nesting overhead.

Paddle to shore on the larger peninsula on the west side of the cove to explore the short hiking trails and rock formations suitable for low-level rock climbing, scrambling, and bouldering. With both shaded and fully exposed areas, a short jaunt from your canoe or kayak up the rocky trails can provide exceptional panoramic views of the Columbia River. In the summer, you can also find yourself a snack on the peninsula, thanks to a substantial amount of wild berries. The peninsulas that surround Government Cove are for the most part undeveloped and receive minimal maintenance—while you will not have to pay any fees for parking or day use, you also will not find any restrooms, drinking fountains or picnic tables…or a boat ramp.
