The Green Mountain Campground is a small campground with a total of four campsites, a vault toilet, picnic tables and fire grates. It does not accommodate large crowds, and that can be a plus to many campers in search of a remote and more-secluded destination. Because each of the campsites are situated on the hillside, each affords 180-degree views to the surrounding cinder cones, lava flows and desert landscape of the Christmas Valley and Fort Rock area.

For a 360-degree view of the area, hike just a hundred yards up the hill from the campground and check out the Green Mountain Fire Lookout Tower. This is an active lookout tower, and at the time of visit it was staffed by an exceptionally knowledgeable and talkative Forest Service member. When open to the public and manned from June through October, the Lookout Tower provides a view to Fort Rocks State Natural Area and the many other surrounding geological sightseeing features.
