The Green Mountain Fire Lookout Tower provides a watch over the Christmas Valley and Fort Rock area. As an active lookout tower, it is manned from June through October. During this time, you can venture to the top and enjoy the 360-degree view while chatting with a Forest Service employee on post. At the time of visit, the Fire Lookout Tower was staffed by an exceptionally knowledgeable and talkative Forest Service employee who was more than happy to explain the geological history of the area and the function of the equipment within the tower. The geological history is truly unique due to the surrounding volcanic activity with cinder cones and lava flows in all directions.

The Fire Lookout is paired with the small Green Mountain Campground, which is a great option if you’re visiting this remote destination. The campground offers four total sites with a vault toilet, picnic tables and fire grates.
