Jonsrud Viewpoint offers a spectacular view of 11,250’ Mount Hood and the Sandy River Valley. Conveniently located just outside downtown Sandy, this viewpoint and small park (less than 5 acres large) is named after the Jonsrud Family who settled west of Sandy in 1877 and acquired this piece of land in the early 1900s. Phil Jonsrud, historian and lifelong Sandy resident, donated this viewpoint to the city in 1984.

At the viewpoint there is a short brick pathway leading to an area with informative plaques and two telescopes offering an up close view of Mt Hood. The plaques tell of the history of Oregon Trail emigrants and the Barlow Road. These brave souls had to make their journey in covered wagon through the terrain below. One of the last major obstacles of their journey was crossing the Devil’s Backbone (visible from here) before entering the Sandy River Valley and ultimately the Willamette Valley.

Parking is limited here, so have patience if you need to wait to secure a spot. The viewpoint is an excellent photo opportunity, made even better at sunrise or sunset. For those looking to explore further, Sandy River Park is next door and has a trail that leads right down to the river below.
