Recently opened in fall, 2013, this desert oasis campground provides an overnight base from which to explore Cottonwood Canyon State Park. This new state park is more than 8,000 acres and includes opportunities for world-class Chinook salmon fishing, bass fishing, wildlife viewing, seasonal rafting, hiking, and equestrian trails.

Today the campground features 21 tent/car sites, a large group site for $51 per night, seven walk-in sites reserved for hikers and bikers, vault toilets and potable water. Unfortunately, the campground’s current stage of development affords zero shade or relief from the intense sun that keeps this arid John Day River canyon sizzling through triple-digit temperatures during the summer months. Spring and fall are certainly the best times of year to visit.

Funding permitting, the campground will eventually provide restrooms, showers, electricity, and riverside cabins, as in other state parks (not to mention vegetation to keep visitors cool).

Note: Cottonwood Canyon's Lone Pine Campground is open year-round and is operated on a first-come, first-served basis. Horseback riding is permitted on the Lost Corral Trail; however, the campground does not currently provide campsites with horse corrals or tie-ups. Due to the arid climate and wildfire risks, campfires are prohibited June 1 through September 30. Also note that rattlesnakes and ticks are common in the area.
