Many of the winter trails around Bend are designed for cross-country skiers, but this lovely loop trail is made just for snowshoeing. The Snowshoe Long Loop is a moderate, 3.25-mile trail that meanders through the snow-covered forest surrounding the lakes. By adding a .75 mile (each way) connector trail to the loop, you can visit the Nordeen Shelter and take a rest by a cozy wood stove.

The Nordeen Shelter was rebuilt in 2007 after the original was destroyed by fire. This warming hut, enclosed on three sides, is a nice place to sit and enjoy the views looking east. The shelter is equipped with a wood stove and is supplied with wood that should last through the season. While visiting the shelter, be sure to read the trail etiquette sign, check out the trail map, and learn more about the legacy of Emil Nordeen. A Swedish immigrant who came to the United States in the early 1900s, Nordeen quickly rose up the ranks of cross-country ski racers in Central Oregon. In addition to the shelter bearing his name, a ski race from Bachelor to Wanoga also celebrates Nordeen's skiing accomplishments.

This snowshoe loop connects with several other trails in a dense network of winter ski and snowshoe trails. There are many ways to link up and explore various loops and one-way trips in this area. Pick up a map at the trailhead kiosk and go have an adventure!
