Eleven miles from the town of Westfir on North Fork Road/NF-19 sits a large, unmarked pullout on the left. Note that, because none of the pullouts along NF-19 are signed, visitors should reset their odometer at the covered bridge in Westfir to be sure of the distance. The pullout has room for several cars. Two trails lead to two separate swimming holes, each of which is well worth a visit. The upstream pool is by far the larger and is distinguishable by a large rock outcrop that is a perfect perch for the day. On the downstream side there is a small beach that is a great spot for kids; the water is shallow and calm, and the overhanging branches shade the beach for much of the day. Unfortunately, some maximum-impact visitors have decided to carve out a campsite here.

The downstream pool is most easily accessed from a spur that extends off of the entrance trail. This area is decidedly smaller and more intimate, and the narrowness of the river at this point will mean partial shade for most of the day. Still, a small, sandy beach is available on the trail side, and a deep, green pool winds gently before it. A day here is guaranteed to be transformative.

Rivers like this are unusual and uniquely vulnerable to damage from inconsiderate users. Please do your part to protect this place; as you’re packing out what you pack in, grab any other litter you see lying around, and stick to established trails to avoid damaging the soil and vegetation.
