Rainbow Campground is one of several campgrounds that sits adjacent to the Clackamas River in the Mount Hood National Forest. Rainbow, in comparison to larger and more trafficked campgrounds such as Lazy Bend and Indian Henry, has only 17 sites, and being further up the river (further from Portland/Estacada), means it is much quieter.

Most sites are heavily shaded by Douglas fir and maple tress, which in the early summer season, may be damp. There are a few sites, however, that provide both direct sun exposure and access to the Oak Grove Fork of the Clackamas River. At every site in the campground visitors will enjoy ample space and privacy. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, campfire ring and a grill. Vault toilets and potable water are provided as well. There are no hookups for RVs, but most sites are large enough to accommodate a modest size RV or trailer.

Fishing from a riverside campsite or another spot along the Oak Grove Fork offers anglers a chance to catch winter steelhead, spring Chinook or Kokanee salmon, all common in the area.  Hiking, mountain biking, and rafting are also popular activities.  And if the waters of the Clackamas River or Oak Grove Fork are a bit too chilly, consider a visit to Bagby Hot Springs to warm up. It is located just 14 miles southwest of the campground.

Note that Ripplebrook Campground is the closest alternative for tent or small-RV camping if Rainbow Campground is full or if you’re simply looking for another option.  Rainbow Campground is open from May 24 through September 15.
