The Rogue Elk Campground is a beautiful, conveniently located campground near the town of Shady Cove. It features 38 Campsites right on the Rogue River: 16 with water and electricity, and 22 that are basic without hookups. Rogue Elk Campground is the most popular campground on the upper rogue, and it is maintained by the Jackson County Parks services. The Rogue River is known for an abundance of coho and Chinook salmon as well as trout and steelhead, making this campsite an excellent choice for anyone looking to fish (for fishing updates click here). The campground is RV accessible and features a boat launch.

Water temperature on this section of the Rogue River is regulated at the The William L. Jess Dam, located a few miles upstream. Water from various levels in Lost Creek Lake is mixed to achieve a desired temperature before it is released. This temperature control improves fish migration and survival, but it also contributes to very cold water year-round, making swimming in the river rather unpleasant. That being said, the best time to camp on the Rogue River for those not interested in fishing would be at the peak of the summer when the heat is unbearable elsewhere.
