Shellburg Falls Loop offers a handful of rewarding sites on a relatively short and easy hike. The trailhead is easy to spot, and the adventure begins on a private gravel road. The road is open to cattle until you reach the lower Shellburg falls, so be aware that you may have company for the first section. The lower falls is quite photogenic, though moderate scrambling is required to enjoy the best angles. From the lower falls, exit the gravel road to the left and take a nice stroll through the lush, moss-filled wilderness up to Shellburg Falls.

The 100-foot Shellburg Falls is like a miniature version of the nearby South Falls at Silver Falls State Park. The water flows over an extended ledge that creates an accessible recess behind the falls. After leaving Shellburg Falls, continue up a few switchbacks and you will eventually return to the gravel road.

As you return, keep an eye out for an old logging road to your left. Follow this road and take the first trail on the right to reach the top of the somewhat hidden Stasel Falls. The top offers a fantastic view of the creek and a giant, free-standing rock that sits in front of the falls. Scramble down to the bottom at your own risk: it is very steep, so you should bring a rope. When your exploration is complete, follow the gravel road all the way back to the trailhead.

Note: Bikes and horses are allowed on the gravel road, but they are prohibited on the main trail that leads to Shellburg Falls.

Note that a helpful person has attached climbing ropes to the scramble below Stassel Falls. Many thanks!

This is a fairly low elevation destination, around 1100', so it does not get snow very often. It's definitely worth the 1/2 day or less it takes to see it on the rare occasion there is significant snow fall. When temperatures have been freezing look to the right of Shellburg falls and take note of the cliff face covered with icicles and ferns. Water dripping from the wall freezes the plants at the base solid!
