Buck Hall is a day use and camping area right on the coast in Francis Marion National Forest. The most popular activities here are boating and fishing along the Intracoastal Waterway, which the boat ramp provides direct access to. It is also situated nicely for hiking and mountain biking on nearby trails, and the campground makes a convenient stay for travelers touring the coast. It is one of the most popular campgrounds in the area, and it offers a variety of amenities including restrooms, showers, and drinking water (for registered campers only). All sites have picnic tables and fire rings with grates. RV sites have standard electric hookups. There are also tent-only sites with no hookups. All sites are ADA accessible.

The campground is located in a grassy field with a few trees, but shade is generally scarce. All sites are within sight of the waterway and benches are available for relaxing by the water, but camping is allowed in designated sites only. A fishing dock, boat ramp, and picnic shelter are available to campers and day users. Buck Hall Recreation Area is also the eastern terminus of the Palmetto Trail, which traverses the state of South Carolina from the mountains to the coast. This final section is the Awendaw Passage, which begins from a trailhead in the day use parking area.
