For Congaree visitors wanting a dirt trail in addition the the Boardwalk, Weston Lake Loop is the best choice for an easy yet rewarding hike. This trail loops southward from the Boardwalk and travels along the bank of Cedar Creek, making for nice views and varied scenery that the Boardwalk does not offer. You will also see huge trees of different species here, like oaks and poplar, and you can get right up next to them without the confines of the Boardwalk. Wildlife spotting and bird watching are also improved by getting deeper into the forest and reaching the creek. Because most of Weston Lake Loop is natural surface, expect mucky spots after wet weather.

When hiking this loop, don't miss the chance at a short side trip to Wise Lake. This lake is smaller but maybe more beautiful than Weston Lake. It is located just across a bridge over Cedar Creek, near the junction for Oakridge and River Trails, which lead into Congaree's wilderness area. Either of those trails make a worthwhile extension to Weston Lake Loop as well if you desire a longer trip.
