When one thinks of Texas, they do not automatically jump to visions of waterfalls, rushing rivers, and peaceful woods.  About 45 minutes away from the capital city of Austin, Hamilton Pool Preseve sits outside of the quiet town of Dripping Springs. A short, downhill hike (about 1/4 mile each way) from the parking lot will bring you to a picturesque pool and 45 foot waterfall, created when the dome of an underground river collapsed in on itself.

There is a beach for swimming and relaxing in the sun.  The water is cool year round and thus perfect for the Texas heat. For braver souls, the preserve is open to swimming year round and averages in the high 50s to low 60s. Keep in mind that reservations are required March 1 and October 31, and the ability to swim is dependant on bacteria levels in the water. The area is closely monitored by park staff, and because it is a preseve it is important to follow all rules and posted signs. Check the Travis County Parks website for the most up to date information.
