Located in East Canyon, Affleck Park Campground feels out of the way, even though it’s just 20 minutes from Salt Lake City or Park City. This little campground doesn’t offer extensive services or facilities, but the scenery is great and it’s rarely crowded. The area is steeped in local history: the Donner-Reed party passed this way in 1846, and the trail they left brought Mormon pioneers to Utah into the 1860s. This trail runs through the park and now connects to numerous side trails that are popular with hikers and mountain bikers.

Affleck Park is in a watershed area, so pets are not allowed. There are 21 individual sites here, each with picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. Vault toilets are available, but you’ll need to bring your own water and firewood.  Reservations must be made in advance through the park website or by phone.

Wildlife you may encounter here includes deer, elk, and even moose, along with the park’s healthy beaver population. Trails all around keep hikers and mountain bikers busy, and the winding two-lane road through East Canyon is popular with road bikers as well. Cyclists can be dropped off at nearby Big Mountain pass for a downhill ride back to the campground.
