The Boulder City Viewpoint located off Highway 12 offers a great view down toward the small community of Boulder, Utah. While the view isn’t quite as spectacular as the other viewpoints along Highway 12 closer to Escalante, it is still well worth a stop if you are passing through.

The town of Boulder is extremely isolated, in fact it’s hard to comprehend just how isolated it was until recently. Boulder was the last incorporated town in the continental U.S. to receive its mail by mule train. It wasn’t until 1940 when the Civilian Conservation Corps finished building the road between Escalante and Boulder that the town finally received its mail year-round by automobile.

Boulder was once primarily a ranching community, but in the 1980s various pressures on the regional cattle industry led many Boulder ranchers to give up ranching.

Take your time and enjoy the great view out across the town of Boulder and toward Capitol Reef National Park and the Henry Mountains beyond.
