The Boynton Overlook is located off Highway 12 about halfway between the towns of Escalante and Boulder. This overlook provides stunning views of the colorful slickrock landscape and of the Escalante River below.

The overlook is named after John Boynton. Boynton was a cattle man caught in a confrontation over a woman that ended with murder in 1878. Looking at the landscape below you can certainly imagine that it’d be a perfect place for an outlaw to hideout.

There is an informative plaque at the overlook that tells of the riparian area along the meandering Escalante River. Cottonwoods and willows line the river corridor which is home to ducks, beavers and even otters.

After enjoying the view, head down to the river for a hike along the Escalante River Trail, or for something a bit tamer, check out the next-door Kiva Koffeehouse for a hot drink with a stunning view.
