Don't hesitate to get outdoors just because you may not have a lot of hiking experience. Sometimes the drive can be just as rewarding. Burr Trail in Utah courses roughly 67 miles through Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and Capital Reef National Park with spectacular views of rugged and desolate desert landscapes.

The views along this drive are spectacular. From the Henry Mountains to the Waterpocket Fold to the red Circle Cliffs, this drive has sights for any traveler. The towering red cliffs of Long Canyon provides spectacular photographic moments. The beautiful landscape that stretches for thousands of miles with each scenic viewpoint offers a glimpse into another world. There are a variety of hikes ranging from easy to strenuous along the road, and side trips are encouraged.

The drive includes a series of steep and narrow switchbacks that do not allow for quick maneuvering via large vehicles. RVs are not recommended. Plan on spending the entire day out and about as the drive from Boulder to Bullfrog is about five hours. If you bring along your dog, make sure it is on a leash. This drive can easily be experienced over a two-day period as camping is abundant in these public lands. For Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and Capital Reef National Park, a free permit is required before camping in certain areas, even in dispersed locations. Stop by a visitor center to obtain a permit.

The Burr Trail connects Boulder to Bullfrog, Utah. The road is paved or maintained for the duration of the trail, but in bad weather the red clay may become impassable even for four-wheel drive vehicles. Bring lots of water as there are no gas stations or pit stops along the way to refuel yourself or your vehicle. Remember to pack it in and pack it out—the great outdoors is not your personal dumpster!
