Utah’s Highway 12 is a spectacular drive, with the section between Escalante and Boulder being extra special. One of the best stops along this drive is at the Head of The Rocks Overlook.

This viewpoint offers amazing views out across the Escalante Canyons. Colorful slickrock stretches almost as far as the eye can see. From this vantage point you can see all the way from the Aquarius Plateau along the northern horizon, to the Henry Mountains, to Navajo Mountain on the Utah-Arizona border. The maze of deep, winding canyons that form the Escalante River basin below are an incredible sight.

One of the most incredible parts of the viewpoint is seeing Highway 12 as it winds through the vast slickrock terrain below. There is an informative plaque here telling of the construction of the “Million Dollar Road” and just what a feat it was.
