Escape the crowds by visiting this peak in the quieter corner of Zion National Park. The Kolob Terrace is a rugged section of canyon country tucked away in the northwest corner of the park. There is only one road that leads to a small scattering of trails that explore the area. Evidence of volcanic eruptions and sedimentary deposition is present throughout the area. Black, crumbly basalt flows rest on top of eroding layers of white and red sandstone.

North Guardian Angel rises like a sentinel over the Kolob Terrace. Its prominent slick rock silhouette is unmistakable. A bit more than just a hike, some equipment and experience is needed to stand atop this impressive summit.

To reach the base of the climb, take the Wildcat Canyon Trail to the Northgate Peak Trail. This dead ends on a blocky knob of lava between the Northgate Peaks. North Guardian Angel is visible straight ahead. Bushwhack down into a sandy wash and head for the base of the rock. From there, scramble up the slab to the base of the east ridge. Ropes and harnesses are helpful at this point. The first 20 feet presents the steepest climbing. Occasional pine trees make excellent belay stations. Follow the ridge, staying left to avoid vertical obstacles, all the way to the summit. Bring sufficient webbing to create belay anchors and to replace worn out rappel anchors. Chocks and cams are unnecessary.
