Sunset Rock is a phenomenal viewpoint overlooking the village of Stowe. The large rock outcropping faces west, providing perfect views of the setting sun behind Mount Mansfield. Sunset Rock is accessible year round via a short trail from Sunset Street or a trail that descends from an upper overlook. The upper overlook is accessible by car via the Taber Hill Road during the spring, summer, and fall. A glacial kettle hole near Sunset Rock provides geologic intrigue, while the Taber Trail adds territory to walk.

One challenge with Sunset Rock is the lack of parking in peak season. If you find parking to be scarce on Sunset Street, you can try the Stowe Recreation Path Trailhead just across Route 100. At the end of Sunset Street, the trail begins. A small information kiosk with a map marks its start.

The trail climbs gradually as it weaves through the forest before bending sharply to the left. The trail to the Upper Overlook splits off to the right, climbing a set of wooden stairs, while the view from Sunset Rock and glacial kettle hole can be found by continuing to the left.

Continuing up toward the upper overlook, careful observers may note the remnants of an old stone fence to the left of the trail. Such fences were common in New England in early American history, and each stone was hand placed. Eventually the Taber Trail joins from the right, providing a possible extension to your walk. The Taber Trail tends to be soggier than the others. Either trail will bring you to the Summit Access Road, which is closed in the winter. At the very top, an open grassy area with views to the west will greet you.
