Woodford State Park is a hidden gem for people who appreciate solitude, wildlife, and quiet reflection. The lake is small with good swimming, fishing, and paddling opportunities, but visitors should be warned that the weather stays cool up here even on the hottest summer day. There is a small swimming beach, plus kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats for rent at the ranger station.

The lake, known as Adams Reservoir, is surrounded by fir, spruce, hemlock, and a few hardwoods. A 2.7-mile trail meanders around it, taking you through the forest, around expansive wetlands, across bridges, and finally into the campground. The trail is not popular, and you will rarely see other hikers. You do stand a chance of seeing deer, moose, or otters though, so be on the lookout.

The busiest part of the park is the campground, which has over 80 tent/RV sites, 20 lean-tos, and four cabins. Many of the sites are waterfront, and several others offer water views. The park is fun to visit in all four seasons. The fishing is especially great in the spring, when many anglers catch the state limit in as little as an hour. The black flies keep all but the bravest souls away in late May and early June, but after that it's a perfect mountain oasis for swimming, hiking, paddling and camping. The forest puts on quite a display in early- to mid-October. Lastly, the campground roads and trails are great for skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. The lake usually freezes by January, opening it up for skiing and ice fishing.
